Event Title
4th Annual HCPL Hispanic Heritage Fiesta!

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the Baldwin Boettcher Branch Library as we present the fourth annual Fiesta @ HCPL. The day's festivities include live music and dance, craft and activity stations, children's authors, refreshments, and fun for the whole family! Best of all, kids will get free books while supplies last!

Featured Programs:

1:15 PM: Story time with Raquel Ortiz

Raquel Ortiz and Lena Jones invite families to an hour-long program for kids ages five and up focusing on the bilingual picture book, "When Julia Danced Bomba / Cuando Julia bailaba bomba". Ortiz will introduce the concept of the Afro-Caribbean music and dance called “bomba,” and will teach bomba beats, basic dance moves, and lyrics to songs. In addition to a picture walk through the book, an interactive puppet show and film screening—both based on the story—will entertain families as they sing, dance, and drum along. We will be giving away 50 copies of "When Julia Danced Bomba / Cuando Julia bailaba bomba", while supplies last. First come, first served, one per family.

2:00 PM: Essence of Mexico present Folklorico Mixteca

Dances from the Northern state of Nuevo Leon. These dances include “Zapateados,” “The Polka” and Norteños.”

Travel south of the border with Mixteco Ballet Folklórico! The group presents dances from the Northern state of Nuevo Leon, which were first brought to Mexico from European countries such as Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia. In the state of Veracruz, the “Zapateados”, or footwork, are very intricate and reminiscent of the Flamenco dances from Spain.

3:00 PM: Art Class with Frida Kahlo

During her lifetime, Frida Kahlo taught art to many children in Mexico City. Thanks to a crack in the space/time continuum, this internationally renowned artist will travel to the present day and continue her unique instruction for Houston kids!
