Young Audiences of Houston Presents: African Rhythms and Spirituals with Joseph Dixon
This performance is inspired by two of the oldest forms of communication—the drum and the human voice. It explores the origins and history of African percussion and Spirituals from Americans of African descent. Students learn about traditional African drums such as the Djembe, Ashiko, and Dun Dun, as well as the Congolese Tumbadora.
Come explore the history and meanings behind Spirituals; learn how rivers, locomotives, and the Big Dipper symbolized freedom! Get hands on experience creating rhythms representing the life cycle of a river.
No registration required. Children in grades 1st–5th may attend with an accompanying adult. Space is limited.
