Read Against the Machine! is a new nonfiction book club exploring social, cultural, historical, and political topics. Selections will highlight varied perspectives and encourage readers to think critically about the ideas and narratives that shape contemporary life.
In March, we are reading Sarah Smarsh's 2018 memoir, Heartland:
"During Smarsh's turbulent childhood in Kansas in the '80s and '90s, the forces of cyclical poverty and the country's changing economic policies solidified her family's place among the working poor.
