Black History Month is an annual celebration to honor the achievements and history of African Americans in the U.S. Join us as we celebrate with a Maker craft, popcorn and the movie, 'Hidden Figures (PG)'. For the Maker Craft, participants will learn about asymmetry while decorating laser-cut masks inspired by the artist Kimmy Cantrell.
Hidden Figures movie summary:
Three brilliant African American women at NASA, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history, the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.
Kimmy Cantrell's "Mask Series":
Kimmy Cantrell is a business man and professional artist from Atlanta, Georgia.
He is famous for his collection of ceramic wall art, called “Mask Series” from the late 90's. His art has been exhibited across the U.S., including at the International Art Expo and the National Black Fine Art Show in New York.
He uses asymmetry to challenge traditional definitions of beauty. “I want to show the beauty within flaws,” he explains. “Imperfections tell stories that are far more compelling than perfection.”
